What's brewing, holistic friends!
If you're like me, you enjoy treating yourself to a coffee to kickstart your day. But did you know that not all coffee is created equal? Today, I’m diving deep into the holistic side of coffee—from sourcing the best beans to whipping up a delicious vanilla protein cold brew. Let's get brewing!
The Importance of Sourcing Coffee
First things first, let's talk about the origins of your coffee. The quality of your coffee starts at the source. Single origin, sustainably farmed, organic and rigorously tested beans will ensure the highest quality. Look for coffee that's:
Organic: Grown without harmful pesticides.
Single Origin: Provides a distinct flavor profile unique to the region.
Free of Pesticides and Mold: Tested to be free from contaminants & mycotoxins.
Sustainably Farmed: Grown with regenerative practices in biodiverse soil.
What Are Mycotoxins?
Ever heard of mycotoxins? These are naturally occurring toxins produced by certain molds found in food and coffee. In large amounts, mycotoxins can be harmful to your health, causing anything from headaches, fatigue, brain fog, to poor sleep, congestion and immune system suppression. To avoid these, opt for high-quality, mold-free coffee.
I love the beans from EquiLife, they’re organic, sourced from Columbia, and utterly delicious. Plus, their dedication to sustainable farming and mycotoxin testing allows me to thoroughly enjoy my coffee without concern.
Toxins in Coffee
Aside from mycotoxins, conventional coffee can contain pesticides and other chemicals. That's why choosing organic coffee is so important. By going organic, you're not only protecting your health but also supporting farming practices that are better for the planet.
Best Time to Drink Coffee
Timing is everything! While that early morning cup can feel like a necessity, drinking coffee right after waking up isn't ideal. Your cortisol levels (the hormone that makes you feel alert) are naturally high when you wake up. The best time to drink coffee is mid-morning, around 9:30-11:30 AM, when your cortisol levels start to dip. This way, you'll get the maximum benefit from your caffeine boost.
How to Make Cold Brew at Home
Cold brew is a fantastic way to enjoy coffee, especially during warmer months. It’s smoother, less acidic, and can be a great base for various coffee drinks. Here’s a simple way to make it at home:
Ingredients:
1 cup coarsely ground coffee beans
4 cups cold filtered water
A large mason jar or French press
Instructions:
Combine the coffee grounds and water in your jar or French press. I use a half gallon mason jar and an organic cotton cold brew bag.
Stir gently to ensure all grounds are saturated.
Cover and let it steep in the refrigerator for 12-24 hours.
Strain the mixture through an organic cotton cold brew bag, coffee filter, fine-mesh sieve, or French press plunger.
Store your cold brew in the fridge for up to a week. Enjoy over ice!
Vanilla Protein Cold Brew Recipe
Ready to take your cold brew to the next level? This vanilla protein cold brew is not only delicious but also packed with nutrients. Perfect for a post-workout refreshment or a midday pick-me-up!
Ingredients:
2 cups cold brew coffee
1 scoop vanilla protein powder (I love This Protein Powder)
1 scoop collagen powder (try This Collagen Powder)
1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk or milk of choice
1 tsp vanilla extract
Ice cubes
A splash of maple syrup to sweeten if needed
Instructions:
Froth the milk with a milk frother.
Add your prepared cold brew and vanilla.
Continue to mix with the frother while you slowly stream in the protein powder and collagen.
Add your ice cubes.
Stir and enjoy!
Alternatively, add the milk, coffee, protein powder, collagen and vanilla to a blender. Blend until smooth. Fill a glass with ice cubes and pour the mixture over the ice!
The Benefits of Collagen
Collagen is a powerhouse protein that provides numerous benefits, particularly when it comes to supporting your joints, hair, skin, and nails. Whole body collagen helps to maintain the elasticity and hydration of your skin, reduces the appearance of wrinkles, and promotes strong, healthy hair and nails. Additionally, it supports joint health by providing the necessary building blocks for cartilage repair and maintenance. Adding a scoop of collagen to your coffee is an easy and effective way to boost your overall health and wellness.
Final Sip
Coffee is more than just a drink; it's an experience. By choosing high-quality, sustainably sourced beans and being mindful of when and how you drink it, you can elevate your coffee ritual to a holistic practice. So go ahead, take a sip of that ethically sourced, toxin-free, perfectly timed cup of joy. And don't forget to try out that vanilla protein cold brew recipe!
